Akshaya Patra Join Hands With Government To Improve Quality Of Midday Meals

Karnataka has both public primary and public pre-primary schools which educate over 8 million children. However, the learning potentials of the children are below average which is quite alarming.

With an endeavor to deal with this hunger or micronutrient malnutrition, fortified rice will be served to 4.5 lakh students, under midday meal programme, across 2,600 government schools in Bengaluru Urban, Dharwad and Ballari districts.

Mr Tanveer Sait—Primary and Secondary Education Minister, signed an agreement with Akshaya Patra Foundation and Akshara Foundation, making an effort to improve the quality of midday meals and commencing math learning programmes in Government schools.

Under the three-year agreement with Akshara Foundation, the government will introduce Math Learning Programme for school children. To make this possible, the students will also be provided with a mathematics kit. At present, this programme has been executed in six districts of the state. The second phase will include regions like Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapura, Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, Gadag and Dharwad; it will benefit over 1.29 lakh students across 4,149 schools.

“There are 34 educational districts in Karnataka and we are trying to cover the districts with the lowest educational levels to those with the highest education levels. We have already completed six districts and are starting with the next six,” said Tanveer Sait.

Teachers will undergo training sessions on how to use the Mathematics kit which will further enable them to teach the students properly.

India is one of those countries which unfortunately stand high on the ranking index when it comes to social devils like malnutrition among children; World Bank concluded this on the basis of a survey. We have highest number of underweighted children and that’s too below the age of three, in spite of 50% growth in GDP since last century. The number is so huge in India that our contribution of malnourished children is one third in total of this population all over the world which is half the root cause of the child mortality rate.
Government is trying its best but it’s still lagging behind in implementing the effective-efficient schemes. Akshaya Patra Foundation is such a non-profit organization which is following the path of one of the schemes of government of India, i.e. midday meal and working towards providing the essential nutrients to more than 11 lakh school children in almost a dozen states across the nation on daily basis. Akshaya Patra is working with the motive “no child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger”, of its existence on this planet. The organization mainly focuses on those schools where children who belong to underprivileged sector of society enroll themselves.
Recently on the Independence Day, a food ordering and delivering company based out of Bangalore named Swiggy, decided to contribute fifteen rupees from its every order to Akshaya Patra Foundation, which comes out to be covering cost of food for 200 school children. They also encouraged their customers this Independence Day to come forward and order food, this time not only for themselves but indirectly help in providing a day’s meal to a child who is fighting against hunger right now.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Zilla Parishad High School in Kanukunta village, Jinnaram Mandal in Medak district, Hyderabad is a cheerful place to be. It’s here we meet Kiran, a 15-year-old boy who wants to make a difference in this world. Kiran is a 10th standard Akshaya Patra beneficiary who has a firm determination to join the police force with a moral virtue to serve and protect the public.

Kiran is born and brought up in Kanukunta village. His family is into agriculture and owns a small plot. His parents work as farmers to earn their livelihood. He has an older brother who is married and also practices farming. While Kiran projects an energetic boldness, he has a humble personality. “When I join the police force, I wish to serve the public wholeheartedly. I want to fulfil this for my family. I know I have to work hard to achieve this,” says a confident Kiran.

Kiran is happy to show his appreciation toward the Akshaya Patra meals, and tells us that he and his friends are fond of the food. “I like the fruits also,” said Kiran (Fruits are provided to various schools in Hyderabad by Akshaya Patra).

Kiran is fluent in Telegu. He is quick to tell us that he likes mathematics. He points out that learning his state’s language is important to him to communicate with people, especially if he has to join the police force.

Kiran looks forward to joining the police service as soon as he completes his education. “I will do my further studies and then write the IPS exam,” he says.
Kiran’s moral disposition boosts his willpower to reach his dreams of become a public servant of the country. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Akshaya Patra has won the SAFA Best Presented Annual Report Awards 2013 in the Non-Governmental Organizations (including NPOs) category! In this highly illustrious contest evaluated by SAFA (South Asian Federation of Accountants), Akshaya Patra has come first, ahead of all the SAARC countries participating. This exemplifies the excellent standards that the Foundation continues to maintain in its financial accounting.

The award was conferred to Akshaya Patra on 4th December in Bhubaneshwar, and was accepted by Achytya Krishna, on behalf of the organisation. The Annual Report was evaluated based on certain stringent criteria like Improvement in Transparency, Accountability and Governance shown in the entries submitted by the South Asian countries.

Expressing his pleasure over receiving the award Chanchalapathi Dasa, Vice-Chairman of Akshaya Patra said, “We are honoured to have received this prestigious award, SAFA Best Presented Annual Report Awards 2013. This is indeed a testimony to our adherence to the highest standards of governance philosophy and our continuous strive for excellence by adopting the best practices. The award encourages us to keep performing efficiently and ethically”.

SAFA is a platform for professional accountancy agencies to work towards the continued progression and distinction of the accountancy profession in the SAARC region. This is the fifth time that Akshaya Patra is receiving a SAFA Award.

VK Hill and Hubli kitchens bag CII National Food Safety Awards 2014!

Akshaya Patra’s Hubli and Vasanthapura(VK Hill) kitchens have been awarded the coveted CII National Award for Food Safety – 2014! The awards were presented at the 9th Food Safety and Quality Summit held in New Delhi on December 2nd, 2014.

The VK Hill kitchen received the highest position of Outstanding Performance in Food Safety, and the Hubli kitchen received the award for the 2nd highest position of Certificate of Commendation for Significant Achievement in Food Safety.

The award was conferred to Akshaya Patra by K. Chandramouli, Chairman, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India. Also present on the occasion were Mayank Jalan, Co-Chairman, Food Processing Committee and Chairman and Managing Director, Keventer Agro Limited and Kevin D. Gallagher, FAO India representative. Receiving the award on behalf of Akshaya Patra were Muralidhar Pundla, Yagneshwara Dasa, Suresh Kumar, Arun Kumar and Prashanth MB.

The CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) National Award for Food Safety was introduced in 2010, and now includes social and improvement undertakings, and goes beyond good manufacturing practices and management of food safety systems. Large, medium, small and micro sized food manufacturing units, hotels, restaurants and retail outfits dealing with food products are eligible to compete for this award.

The award highlights role models and identifies the ‘Best in Class’ in the manufacturing and food service organisations of India. It provides such organisations a platform for national recognition, and also allows participants to assimilate benchmark practices for future development.

Speaking on the occasion, Muralidhar Pundla, Director – Quality at Akshaya Patra said, “Quality is of paramount importance at Akshaya Patra. It’s an honour to receive this prestigious award from CII and that too, two awards in a single year. We at Akshaya Patra at the same time would like to keep our focus on Continual Improvement Programs to further strengthen our systems and processes to make sure that we can serve more children meals that they can relish every day.”

The kitchens were assessed based on approximately 500 indicators, divided over four categories. The criteria of evaluation ranged over topics like organisation efforts towards change management, compliance to statutory and regulatory requirements, commitment to the effective maintenance of Food Safety Management Systems, and use of Good Manufacturing Practices, amongst others.

In 2013, the Akshaya Patra Bellary kitchen received the CII National Award for Food Safety ‘for its holistic approach in establishing, running and managing efficiently the Food Safety and Quality Systems.’

 

 

 

Platinum win at 3rd Annual Convention and Competition of Lean Six Sigma

Akshaya Patra, Gujarat won the Platinum award in the first category at the 3rd Annakshayapatraual Convention and Competition of Lean Six Sigma. The event attended by about 500 people from India and abroad was hosted on 9th October by Concept Business Excellence Pvt. Ltd, Vadodara.

About 40 case studies by leading manufacturing companies were put forward in the session on Lean Six Sigma tools, from which Akshaya Patra was the first and only NGO to participate in the session. The Foundation received a standing ovation from the competition’s esteemed judges and audience for their case study. Along with Akshaya Patra, there were two other Platinum award winners in the first category.

The other award categories were Diamond and Gold awards.

The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. Per Petersson, Senior Partner, Lean management coach and author; Guest of Honour was Dan Blucher, Senior Partner, Lean management coach and author, with Guest Speaker Sandesh Kadam, Site President, Reliance Industries Limited at Silvassa. Receiving the award on behalf of Akshaya Patra were Tushar Dange, Amarnath Sharma, Amrit Sahoo, Puneet Tripathi and Ajay Wagh.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Lean Six Sigma for Global Competitiveness’. Global Competitiveness here refers to India’s best performance across economic, social and environmental conditions. It encourages data driven policy based on evidences, identification of good practices, and improvement in statistical standards, amongst others. In line with this a Lean Six Sigma approach enables organisations to produce a product/service better by eliminating redundancy, decreasing output time, reducing wastage and developing a zero defect product.

The project which was implemented in Surat achieved the reduction of cooking gas cost by 10 per cent, and streamlined certain processes like raw material flow to the machine, and optimisation of baking temperature and machine speed. In fact the kitchen team achieved four to five times the goal they had set for the project.

This annual convention provided a platform for a wide cross section of industrialists from varying leading companies to discuss real life case studies on how Lean and Six Sigma practices will help streamline and enhance a company’s results. It is an honour for Akshaya Patra to be a part of this programme and receive this illustrious award.
